Buchanan County Release Records
A release record documents the end of one custody episode. It is not the same as an arrest record, booking sheet, current roster, or court disposition. SWVRJA keeps the local confinement-and-release record for Buchanan detainees held at its Haysi, Abingdon, Duffield, and Tazewell facilities. VADOC keeps the prison discharge and supervision record for a person leaving Keen Mountain or another state facility.
“Released” can mean return to the community, but not always. A person may leave on bond, after time served, through a dismissal or court order, or after a sentence ends. A state prisoner may leave on discharge or parole. A transfer to VADOC, another jail, federal custody, or immigration custody ends one agency’s control while confinement continues elsewhere. That distinction is why roster absence alone cannot confirm freedom.

Buchanan County Release Types
The event label determines the next search. A local court or magistrate may authorize a bond release while the case remains open. Sentence completion may return the person to the community. A transfer means custody continues, even when the name drops from Haysi’s view.

Fields in Buchanan Release Records
A focused SWVRJA request should identify the person and approximate date range, then name the existing fields sought. Availability and redaction depend on the record and law. Asking for fields is better than asking the records officer to infer whether someone is “free.”

A VADOC release record is different. It may include the notification-of-release letter, an Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole. Those signed documents can show the state-prison endpoint and what follows. They do not replace a separate SWVRJA record from an earlier jail stay.
The Buchanan court disposition supports both records but answers a different question. A sentencing order can show active time, suspended time, credit, probation, or dismissal without recording the minute when staff completed discharge. Conversely, an SWVRJA release entry can show when its custody ended without fully explaining the legal result. Match the person, case number, date, and release type across both sources.
Request Buchanan County Release Records
Because Buchanan uses a regional jail, send a local jail request to the SWVRJA FOIA officer, not to a presumed county jail records office. Ask for existing records in electronic form and give a narrow date range.
- Provide the full name and enough non-sensitive detail to avoid a namesake.
- State the approximate booking and release dates and that the matter arose in Buchanan County.
- List the booking number, dates, facility, release date and time, release authority, transfer destination if recorded, and booking photo.
- Ask for an advance estimate before costs exceed a limit you choose.
- Compare the response with the matching General District or Circuit Court order.

Virginia Code § 2.2-3704 generally requires an initial response within five working days through production, a lawful withholding, partial production, a no-record response, or permitted extra time. Reasonable actual costs can apply. No flat SWVRJA release-record fee was published.
Buchanan Release Retention and Access
Website visibility is not record retention. The Library of Virginia GS-08 schedule lists cumulative booking-and-release records for 20 years after separation and inmate-incarceration records, including booking sheets and some release documentation, for three years after separation. The series assignment controls. Neither period promises that a former detainee stays on the public roster.
Section 2.2-3706 governs criminal and law-enforcement records and makes routine adult booking photographs available on request, subject to its stated limits. Juvenile, medical, security, victim, witness, sealed, and other protected material may be withheld or redacted.
An official Haysi PREA audit confirms that the secure Records Department maintains confinement-and-release records for people received and released there. That finding supports a historical request when the public roster no longer displays the person. It does not make every field public, set a web-retention period, or override a lawful exemption.
Buchanan Release Dates and Sealing
Virginia’s sealing and expungement rules are changing in stages. Traditional petition-based expungement appears in § 19.2-392.2, while Chapter 23.2 contains newer sealing provisions. The live effective version must be checked at the time of use.
For some eligible offenses, § 19.2-392.12 measures a waiting period from the latest of disposition, release, or a later violation event. An accurate release date can therefore matter. A sealed case may disappear from ordinary court access, but qualification and treatment of related agency records require case-specific legal review.
Release Papers Help Buchanan Inmates
VADOC release papers can resolve an error more directly than a saved locator screen. A person leaving state custody may receive a notification-of-release letter and, when applicable, an Order of Release or signed Conditions of Probation or Parole. The documents identify what changed and what still applies.
VADOC procedure also addresses identity, property, records checks, warrants, and detainers before release. A former SWVRJA inmate has a separate post-release option for personal digital property: the SmartInmate download path permits access to stored photos, messages, and scanned mail with the former inmate’s own credentials. It is not a public record search.
Search Buchanan County Released Inmates
Use a custody-first search. Each system proves only its own event. An exact statement such as “SWVRJA recorded a release on this date” is stronger than a broad claim that the person is free.
- Search the SWVRJA current-inmates doorway. A match supports current regional-jail custody; no match proves only absence from that display.
- Search Virginia Jail VINE for the local custody event and register for later alerts while the record is active.
- Request the SWVRJA release record for a past jail episode.
- Check Buchanan General District and Circuit Court records for disposition, bond, sentence, and later orders.
- Use VADOC for a state prisoner or supervisee, BOP for a sentenced federal prisoner, and ICE only when immigration detention is involved.
SWVRJA offers no official 24-hour or 72-hour release feed. The Buchanan County 24-hour release list path therefore leads with the records, VINE, and direct-contact fallback instead of claiming a nonexistent public list.
VADOC Buchanan Release Search
The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator is updated daily and covers people in state custody or under state supervision. It can bridge prison incarceration and probation or parole, but it is not the search for a short SWVRJA-only stay.

A supervision result means prison custody may have ended while corrections oversight continues. A person fully discharged from both custody and supervision may eventually fall outside the locator’s stated scope.
Buchanan Recent Release Limits
The SWVRJA page and shared “Southwest_VA” JailTracker are current-custody tools. No official released tab, rolling release list, update cadence, or former-record retention period was found. An active profile may show identity, booking details, charges, and a photo, but disappearance can also result from movement among the four authority facilities.
For “released today,” check the current roster, search Virginia Jail VINE, then call Haysi or make a narrow records request. For a weekend or three-day span, define the exact dates and time zone in the request. Do not ask the custodian to interpret “recent.”
Buchanan Post-Release Supervision
The Virginia Parole Board makes parole decisions for eligible people. VADOC Community Corrections supervises parolees and people placed on probation. Search the VADOC locator, read the listed district, and verify the assignment with the district directory. Buchanan and Tazewell are served by District 43, which has an additional office in Buchanan, but a residence does not prove a reporting site.

Buchanan Release Alerts and Federal Records
Virginia Jail VINE covers participating local and regional jails, including SWVRJA. Search one person, confirm the authority, and register for an offered phone, email, or text alert. Phone registration uses a PIN to acknowledge the automated message. A transfer into VADOC may require separate VADOC Victim Services or NAAVI registration.
For a sentenced federal prisoner, use the BOP locator. “Not in BOP custody” and a release date establish only BOP status. ICE’s locator tests current immigration detention and a no-result does not prove release. USMS pretrial custody may require the federal court, counsel, or a direct agency inquiry.
The Virginia State Police registry is another narrow post-release source, but it applies only to people with a legal registration duty. It must never be treated as a list of Buchanan County released inmates. A registry match establishes the public registration information authorized by law, not the release type or every later custody event.
Notification records also stop at different points. Jail VINE updates generally end after a local release, while VADOC notification can include advance release, transfer, parole events, and final release for a state sentence. A person transferred from SWVRJA to VADOC may need a new registration. The first alert should not be assumed to follow the person across custody systems.

Buchanan County Release Facilities
Buchanan is served by a regional jail system and also contains a state prison. Read the facility on the record instead of assuming every Buchanan detainee is at Haysi.
- SWVRJA Haysi Facility is the primary local facility and uses SWVRJA records, Jail VINE, and Buchanan courts.
- SWVRJA Abingdon Facility shares the authority roster and centralized records path.
- SWVRJA Duffield Facility may hold a Buchanan detainee without changing the custodian.
- SWVRJA Tazewell Facility uses the same regional verification chain.
- Keen Mountain Correctional Center is a VADOC state prison, so discharge and parole records come from VADOC.
When Buchanan Releases Happen
VADOC promises that a person leaving a state facility on discharge or parole will be released by 11:59 p.m. on the release date, weather permitting. SWVRJA publishes no equivalent Haysi gate time. Local timing should be confirmed with the facility rather than borrowed from the state-prison rule.
Before any local or regional jail release, Virginia standards require positive identification, verified authority, and a check for other-jurisdiction holds. A scheduled event can become a transfer or delay when a lawful hold appears.
Two Buchanan Court Release Searches
Buchanan users may need both statewide court portals. The General District Court system covers misdemeanor matters and preliminary felony stages after Buchanan is selected. The Circuit Court system covers circuit-level felonies and appeals.
A case can move between them after certification or appeal. Court records explain the legal basis, but the SWVRJA or VADOC record still confirms the custody event.
Two Buchanan Release Contacts
Immediate Haysi questions go to the facility at 1550 Kiwanis Park, Haysi, Virginia, by calling 276-679-7880. Historical FOIA requests go to Melissa White at the Meadowview mailing address and central 276-739-3520 number. The physical jail and formal records office are not the same contact point.
This split saves a request from being routed as an urgent custody call. No business hours or flat record fee were published for the SWVRJA records channel, so neither should be assumed.
Regional Jail Versus State Prison
A person described as a “Buchanan inmate” may be in SWVRJA or at Keen Mountain. Haysi, Abingdon, Duffield, and Tazewell share JailTracker, Virginia Jail VINE, and the regional FOIA custodian. Keen Mountain uses VADOC release documents, the state locator, NAAVI notification, and the assigned supervision district.
Movement inside SWVRJA is not community release. Transfer from SWVRJA into VADOC is also continued custody. The new agency’s record should appear after intake processing.
No federal prison or ICE detention center was identified inside Buchanan County in the official directories reviewed. Federal sentencing and current immigration detention therefore require the appropriate federal locator or agency instead of adding a local facility that the research does not support.
