Tazewell Facility Release Routes
Tazewell is operated by SWVRJA with Haysi, Abingdon, and Duffield. The authority's common JailTracker can place a Buchanan detainee at any of those sites. A Buchanan charge therefore describes the originating case, not necessarily the building where the person is held. Always read the facility field and keep the booking or case number with the search.
A true community release may follow bond, time served, a dismissal, or another court order. Yet a person can also move to another regional facility, transfer to VADOC, or leave under a hold from another jurisdiction. A detainer is a hold that can cause another agency to take custody. The end of Tazewell custody is not always the end of all custody. Ask which event was recorded and where the person went.
| Path | Source to confirm it |
|---|---|
| Community | SWVRJA release entry, Jail VINE, and Buchanan court action |
| Regional transfer | Authority roster and records naming another SWVRJA facility |
| State custody | VADOC locator and state intake record |
| Other agency | SWVRJA transfer entry and receiving custodian |
Confirm Tazewell Release Status
Use the official SWVRJA current-inmates page only for its stated purpose. The shared roster can show an active authority record and current location as represented online. No official historical release view or rolling 24-hour or 72-hour list was found. A missing result is consistent with many events, including transfer, spelling variation, and data timing.
- Search JailTracker and inspect every matching name, facility, and booking detail.
- Search Virginia Jail VINE and confirm that SWVRJA is the custodian shown.
- Read the exact custody phrase and event date; never infer release from silence or no match.
- Call Tazewell for an immediate facility question and send a narrow written request for a past record.
- Check the Buchanan court case, then follow VADOC or another receiving agency when transfer is recorded.
VINE alerts can document a custody event supplied by the jail, though they may lag. The court record explains the legal authority but may not record the moment jail processing ended. Joining the two with the SWVRJA entry produces a more exact finding. The main Buchanan County release search describes court, state, federal, and local paths when the final custodian is uncertain.
Tazewell Facility Contact Details
Call the physical facility about present Tazewell operations. Use the central SWVRJA records channel for a formal release entry. The official contact page does not publish business hours for release-record requests, so verify timing before an in-person visit. Facility staff may also limit the information they can disclose by phone, which makes a focused written request important for historical proof.

The SWVRJA contact page is the official source for this address, phone, and fax. When the person has a Buchanan case, say so clearly. Tazewell is also a place name used in VADOC's District 43 supervision context, but the jail facility and the probation and parole district are different operations. Do not send a jail release request to a supervision office.
Note: Name both “Tazewell Facility” and the Buchanan case to keep the jail request distinct from community-supervision records.
Tazewell Release Record Access
SWVRJA lists Melissa White as its FOIA officer at P.O. Box 279, Meadowview, VA 24361; 276-739-3520; fax 276-739-3534; and mmwhite@swvrja.com. Its FOIA page provides the authority procedure and request form. The request should describe an existing record with enough detail to find it, not ask staff to generate a narrative or compute a date.
Useful fields include the legal name, booking number, admission date and time, assigned Tazewell location, release date and time, release reason or authority, and receiving agency if custody continued. State the date range and preferred format. Ask for an adult booking photograph only if needed. Section 2.2-3706 of the Virginia Code addresses routine adult arrestee photographs on request, subject to its limits and exceptions.
Under Virginia Code § 2.2-3704, the initial response framework is generally five working days. A custodian may produce the record, withhold it with a legal reason, release part with redactions, report that it cannot be found or does not exist, or use additional time allowed by law. Reasonable charges can reflect actual work. No flat Tazewell release fee was found, so request an estimate before authorizing a costly search.
Tazewell Release Fields Matter
The type field determines what “released” means. Bond or recognizance normally ends pretrial detention while the case continues. Time served links the event to completion of the active jail term. A court-ordered release may follow a dismissal or other action. “Transferred” means custody continued. Pickup on a detainer means another jurisdiction received the person. These outcomes should not be merged into one claim.
- Bond
- A basis for leaving pretrial custody while the criminal case remains open.
- Time served
- Completion of the active jail term reflected in the sentence and credit record.
- Transfer
- Movement to another facility or agency without community release.
- Probation
- Court-ordered supervision that may follow a jail term or occur without prison release.
- Parole
- Conditional release from a qualifying prison term under supervision.
Virginia jail standard 6VAC15-40-1090 requires positive identification, verified release authority, and a check for other-jurisdiction holds. That rule helps explain why the release entry is more reliable than a vanished online profile. It records an authorized operational event after staff complete required checks.
Tazewell Roster Has Limits
The roster can expose identity, booking or charge information, facility, and sometimes a booking image for an active record. SWVRJA does not describe it as a release archive. No official publication cadence or online retention window for former detainees was found. Avoid claims that a person remains visible for a set number of hours after release.
Formal retention is not the same as public display. The Library of Virginia GS-08 schedule lists cumulative booking-and-release records for 20 years after separation and inmate-incarceration records for three years after separation, then confidential destruction. The schedule category must be applied to the actual requested item, and its term does not create an open roster lasting that long. Historical access still runs through the records custodian.
A requester seeking a weekend period should supply exact start and end dates and the time zone. That asks for existing entries in a clear span. It does not pretend that SWVRJA publishes a three-day product.
Buchanan Release Agencies Differ
Buchanan County contains both the SWVRJA local system and Keen Mountain Correctional Center. Keen Mountain is a VADOC state prison. Tazewell is a regional jail. A Tazewell release belongs to the authority record, Jail VINE, and originating court. A Keen Mountain discharge or parole belongs to VADOC's release documents, notification system, locator while the person remains in its public scope, and assigned supervision office.
The distinction also affects alerts. Virginia Jail VINE covers participating local and regional jail custody. VADOC and NAAVI handle the state post-conviction notification path. A Jail VINE registration does not automatically follow a person into VADOC. If Tazewell transfers the person to state custody, the next step is state intake and notification, not a community-release conclusion.
District 43 serves Buchanan and Tazewell counties for VADOC supervision, with its public main office in Cedar Bluff. A supervisee's office should be confirmed through the locator or district. Geographic labels alone do not prove where someone reports or which agency last held the person.
Close the Tazewell Search
Finish with language that stays inside the evidence. An SWVRJA release entry can establish that the authority ended or transferred its custody at a stated time. A Buchanan court order can support the reason. VADOC or another receiving agency can show custody that followed. No one record should be stretched past the agency and event it covers.
If a true community release leads to probation or parole, the person is out of the jail setting but may remain under supervision. The VADOC locator may display the assigned district for covered people. Full discharge is a different status and should be supported by the state record or signed release documentation that says so.
Save a VINE notice and obtain the release record when a lasting trail is needed. Current pages can change, while a dated agency entry linked to the correct booking and court case provides clearer proof of the Tazewell outcome.
